Welcome to the Nishma Insight Discussion Forum blog.

The NISHMA INSIGHT is our popular dvar Torah, distributed almost every week by e-mail, that touches upon an important concept in the Parsha, theme in a holiday or event in contemporary society.

Often, readers respond, via e-mail, with comments that initiate a further dialogue. Through this Discussion Forum, we now wish to open this dialogue to others. If you have a comment on the INSIGHT, we invite you place to your comments here; then we invite everyone to join the discussion.

Insight 5773-19: Why Were You Bothering Us?

Study Question

1) The theory expressed in this Insight would seem to challenge the Chassidic view of the rebbe. This is something you may wish to investigate.

  1. I was thinking that in social situations the act of one person taking on responsibility may take from others the need to take responsibility. As long as the responsibility question is an unresolved tension in the air, all feel the need to respond, either by
taking the responsibility or by rejecting it; once one person takes it on, the tension is often to most extent resolved, making it even
harder for others to step up and argue, that its their responsibility

I was thinking, perhaps to teach the people that full responsibility over their lives must be taken, it was necessary for Moshe and Aharon to reject all responsibility -- thats quite an extreme action -- to ensure that the people continue to fully deal with the issue at hand. In the scheme of things, one could argue that Moshe and Aharon are always responsible, given their position as leaders -- but their responsibility also includes educating the people -- and hence a balance must be found -- in particular, to use managerial literature terminology -- for succession planning.

Thank you again for the most interesting insights,
