Insight 5772-19: The Superior Morality of Halachic Study

  1. Thank you. I really enjoyed this insight. I have often wondered why mussar is seen as a 'soft' form of learning... While I don't think your insight was derogatory towards mussar, I thought it does explain why it is sometimes minimally included in certain yeshivot.

    Am I understanding your insight correctly to say that if one's inner compass is weak, learning mussar can strengthen it? However, if one's inner compass is strong, learning halacha will strengthen it?

    Is it fair to assume that most people today will benefit from learning mussar? And that only a select few are exempt?

    And a related question that I'm not sure can be answered generally (since it might greatly depend on the individual): If one has dedicated limited time to learning, should one focus more of his or her time on mussar or halacha?
